Cherry Point Naval Aviation Depot Speeds Cycle Time: Program Management Processes, Tools, and People Are Key to Efficiency

Overview Cherry Point’s customers have a pressing requirement for repairs to be accomplished as quickly as possible. Each day an aircraft is in the shop and out of commission, costs rise significantly. Budget reductions have led to fewer aircraft overall, resulting in an even greater need to keep aircraft operable for as many days as possible each year. Faced with the challenge of reducing repair cycle time to meet customer demand, the leadership of Cherry Point’s power plant SBU tried to improve its production rate. The SBU’s managers decided they needed professional program management advice as well as information technology tools to improve their business process. They chose Robbins-Gioia in July 1997 after noticing the benefits Robbins-Gioia had brought to another SBU within the depot.
