Australian Electoral Commission Delivers a Vote of Confidence in Mercury
Overview The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is responsible for providing the Australian people with an independent electoral service, which meets their needs and encourages them to understand and participate in the electoral process. A federal election is an enormous logistical exercise involving the complex challenge of gathering and counting the votes of millions of Australian citizens to determine the composition of their next government. When Australia went to the polls on November 10, 2001, the challenge for the AEC was further complicated by the need to provide real-time information on vote counting via a virtual tally room on the AEC Web site. To ensure the site would perform flawlessly with the anticipated demand, the AEC turned to its implementation partner, Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), for expertise and advice. CSC commissioned Mercury to run a series of tuning sessions designed to ensure the site could handle up to 14,000 concurrent users on election night and monitor its success in real-world conditions on election night.
