Overview This paper describes how the shift from proprietary Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) solutions to Internet-based or even Web-based infrastructures is inevitable. EDI will not disappear but will adapt and transform itself into a component of Web services. However, this will be more an evolution than a revolution and may take five to ten years to complete. Enterprises should already be planning for the evolution and begin to acquire the necessary expertise and technologies. Enterprises should also understand the indirect impact of the technological shift on the understanding of processes.
