Palm Handhelds Increase Efficiency of Police Department Evaluations

Overview The Arlington County Police Department assigns Field Training Officers (FTOs) as mentors to new graduates of the Police Academy. The graduates, referred to as Probationary Officers, are evaluated by the FTOs for a period of up to three months. In the past, performance observations were recorded with pen and paper. FTOs had to pull off the road to write down their notes and comments. This was very cumbersome and not effective. Now mentoring officers in the field use Palm handhelds equipped with a custom application, called “ADORE” (Automated Daily Observation Report Evaluation). Using Palm each mentoring officer saves three hours per week increased their efficiency by eliminating hand-written recording of observations and eliminated storage of paper records.
