Handheld Application Helps Clinicians Provide Smoking Cessation Counseling at the Point-of-Care
Overview Dr. Strayer recognized the potential for using handheld computers to help educate physicians and developed a software application to run on handhelds from palmOne. Handheld Computer Smoking Intervention Tool (HCSIT) was created to help physicians counsel their patients on smoking cessation. The software application includes Public Health Service (PHS) Guidelines on Smoking Cessation, smoking cessation drug prescribing information, a point-of-care tolerance questionnaire with automatic scoring and pharmacotherapy recommendations for highly dependent smokers. With its use, physicians have point-of-care access to smoking cessation counseling tool. The handheld solution also increases the physician comfort in providing counseling to their patients.
