Remote Backup and Recovery of Oracle Databases: The Standby Database
Overview For most enterprises, data has become the single most critical asset, especially data tied up in Oracle database servers. Therefore, it has become increasingly important that database servers have a highly reliable backup scheme. This includes backup for local issues, as well as issues related to a full-scale disaster. Solving local recovery issues is fairly easy, clustering, data replication, and full hot server standby are all viable options. For remote recovery, however, many of these techniques, when applied to databases are too costly, too complicated, or unreliable. Fortunately, for Oracle databases there is a cost effective, straightforward, and dependable solution: the standby database.
