Butterfly.net: Powering Next-Generation Gaming with On-Demand Computing
Overview Butterfly.net, Inc. wanted to provide game developers and publishers and service providers with a scalable, resilient infrastructure for running Massively Multiplayer Games. Butterfly.net’s business goals were to maintain a flexible pricing model and to minimize upfront capital requirements. Butterfly.net's solution, called the Butterfly Grid, consists of two clusters of approximately 50 IBM eServer xSeries servers running in IBM's Sterling, VA and Los Angeles, CA hosting facilities. The Grid’s principal components - specialized game servers and database servers - are fully meshed over high speed fiber-optic lines, enabling the transparent routing of players to different servers in the Grid.
