CWDM Technology: Access-to-Light

Overview CWDM is a technology that can be useful as a fiber gain device. Acting only on the optical layer, the CWDM devices are simple and compact. AFC’s advantage is its capability to be deployed in outside plant applications. CWDM can be used in a protection mode at the optical layer, or it can be used in an unprotected mode, utilizing the protection layer of the services that it is transporting. This white paper briefly describes the CWDM technology and its features.

Mux/DeMux Optical Specifications and Measurements

Dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) is one of the most effective answers to the ever-growing need for bandwidth that is being generated by the explosive growth of the Internet. Equipment...

Raman Amplification Design in Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) Systems

Raman amplification is based on stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), a nonlinear effect in fiber-optical transmission that results in signal amplification if optical pump waves with the correct wavelength and power...

Latency on a Line-Amplified, DWDM Backbone Network

This white paper focuses on the fixed link propagation delay through a line-amplified, DWDM core network. It presents calculations of latency based on transmission delay through optical fiber segments and...

What is Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM)?

Wave division multiplexing (WDM) refers to an optical transmission technique where multiple optical signals are transmitted on a single optical fiber using diffe.rent wavelengths. In today's high-end WDM systems designed...

Next-Generation Backbone Network Metrics

Since the advent of DWDM, transmission technologies have been benchmarked using a number of technical and economic metrics. The industry traditionally balanced reach, number of wavelengths and bit-rate to provide...
