Successfully Managing Offshore Outsourcing Initiatives

Overview The simple goals of lower costs and better service have resulted in massive tech outsourcing thus rapidly shipping white-collar programming and other technology jobs to low-wage, high-skilled workers in India, China, and Eastern Europe. Indeed research studies suggest that by 2008, 25% of all traditional IT jobs will be situated in emerging markets. Consequently, CIOs must be aware of the challenges involved in these endeavors. Risks including vendor management and performance, security, geopolitical issues, cultural differences, and human resource issues are some of the primary concerns, and must be considered as part of a larger tactical and strategic planning and monitoring effort. The key for forward thinking organizations is to seek offshore resources that appropriately balance skills, cost, and risk against corporate goals, objectives, and future innovation. This effort must be managed and tracked via tools that can facilitate visibility into all offshore projects, partners, and processes.
