Comparing Metro WDM Systems: Unidirectional vs. Bidirectional Implementations

Overview One easy feature to be seen as a difference among the broad offer of Metro WDM products is the minimum number of fibers required for system operation. For most WDM products, a fiber pair is required to achieve full duplex interconnection between nodes. However, in order to better satisfy needs of fiber-constrained networks, some WDM product for metro applications is providing full duplex transmission over a single fiber only. The use of one or the other implementation leads to a different trade-off between competing requirements, affecting overall cost, design complexity, system reliability, performance, and capacity. This white paper tries to shed some light on this topic, explaining the differences and comparing pros and cons for the two alternative approaches.
