x86-standard Servers White Papers

Migrating from Unix to Windows to Achieve Organizational Benefit

Overview Microsoft and its partners have long positioned systems built using x86 servers and Windows server operating environments as viable alternatives to RISC/Unix server solutions. This strategy, however, fell short in the eyes of many customers, who had concerns over the scalability, reliability, and security of the Windows environment. Microsoft and its hardware partners have continued working to address these shortcomings, and with today’s 32- and 64-bit systems running Windows Server 2003, they now have a solution that is arguably viable for many of the applications supported by Unix today. This paper evaluates the capabilities of x86-based Windows Server 2003 industry-standard servers.
