UMTS Network Dimensioning: Using Simulation to Prove the Theory

Overview The complexity of third generation (3G) cellular systems, based on Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (W-CDMA) technology, presents significant design challenges. Since it is impractical for an operator to build a system in the field to prove the design, simulation tools that accurately estimate coverage and capacity for UMTS networks are vital. This paper provides an overview of the issues involved in W-CDMA dimensioning and demonstrates how simulation can resolve some of these issues.
