WCDMA Network Deployments: Asynchronous vs. Synchronous

Overview A basic design decision facing an operator of a WCDMA network is the nature and level of synchronization between base stations in the network. The WCDMA standard allows asynchronous operation in which each base station uses its own independent timing reference. The standard also allows base stations to be synchronized and, in fact, provides explicit signaling support that allows the benefits of synchronous operation to be realized. This paper contrasts these two approaches to synchronization and provides qualitative and quantitative analyses showing the beneficial effects on communication system performance of synchronizing WCDMA base stations. It shows that synchronizing WCDMA base stations increases handset standby time by up to 2.5 times, improves paging performance and enhances system capacity.
