Wireless in the Factory: Improving Productivity with Wireless Mobile Devices

Overview At Intel, they’re using mobile devices, such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) and notebook computers, to overcome these limitations. Their strategy, which connects these devices by means of a wireless local area network (WLAN), has enhanced communications among factory staff, reduced errors, lowered costs, and increased productivity. To develop this strategy, our Information Technology (IT) and Fab Sort Manufacturing (FSM) groups conducted a test to determine how the use of PDAs affected productivity in their fabs. During their investigations, it became clear that wireless networking technologies could greatly enhance the usefulness of these devices in the factory. In this paper, Intel has detailed how they conducted these studies, what they discovered, how they used those findings to develop their strategy, and what benefits they expect to gain.
