Overview Microsoft commissioned IDC, a recognized leader in cost analysis methodologies, to conduct a comprehensive study that evaluated the total cost of ownership (TCO) for Microsoft Windows 2000 and Linux server offerings. After collecting data from IT executives and managers at 104 North American companies in multiple industries, IDC concluded that Microsoft Windows 2000 Server offers a lower TCO than a Linux-based server in four out of five common workload scenarios. This white paper will help IT professionals evaluate the comparative TCO and server platform costs of Windows 2000 and Linux. Additionally, this study will enable users to take a closer look at their IT business needs beyond TCO.
