Interoperability - The Backbone of Broadband

Overview A broadband network is a mix of end equipment defined by standards bodies, built by manufacturers and deployed by service providers. For end users to experience even "simple" services, the various types of equipment must coexist and cooperate in a seamless fashion. This is not an easy task given the complexities of the individual technologies, and the difficulty is compounded in systems that combine multiple broadband technologies. Considering the rapidly growing consumer acceptance of broadband technology worldwide, interoperability has emerged as a fundamental requirement for broadband proliferation. This white paper defines and discusses interoperability as it pertains to broadband systems such as cable, DSL, voice over packet and wireless LAN. The silicon manufacturer's role is discussed, as are the major challenges facing the industry.
