Sao Paulo State Secretary of Education Taps Lotus LearningSpace for a Visionary e-Learning Network
Overview Sao Paulo is the largest developed area of all of Latin America, covering more than 248 square kilometers and accounting for 22 percent of the Brazilian population. A mandatory federal law issued in 1996 requires that all elementary school teachers in Brazil must have a university degree by 2006 in order to continue teaching. However, many experienced teachers in Brazil graduated from specialized high school courses in education and lack the resources to attend a university. To help retain these valuable teachers, the Sao Paulo State Secretary of Education contracted three of the best national universities to create an effective method of delivering the education necessary to meet the federal guideline. The Secretary of Education contracted the Vanzolini Foundation of the University of Sao Paulo to bring its expertise to bear on this significant and daunting challenge. To manage the project they implemented sophisticated project management methods by PMI (Project Management Institute), supported by IBM Lotus collaboration technology: IBM Lotus Domino Document Manager (Domino.Doc), IBM Lotus Instant Messaging (Sametime), and IBM Lotus Team Workplace (QuickPlace). For the e-learning infrastructure they adopted IBM Lotus LearningSpace.
