Network Liability: A New Frontier For Healthcare Risk Management

Overview Consumers continue to seek out medical information online, and recent surveys report that being able to communicate with their physicians by e-mail is important to many Americans. Due to digital signature legislation recently passed by Congress, it is now possible to enter into legal and binding contracts online. Even if they have not entered the brave new world of online consumer interaction, most healthcare organizations are managing some of their business processes electronically via the Internet or corporate intranets. With implementation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) administrative simplification rule less than two years away, payers and providers are gearing up for electronic healthcare payment transactions. The phenomenal growth of technology and its application to healthcare delivery raise a host of that can be categorized as “network liability”. Network liability is defined as the risks, liabilities and solutions associated with electronic processes and interactions arising from business activities that ultimately affect an entity’s value.
