Reality Bytes: The Importance of Realism for Improving Web Site Performance
Overview Network capacity assessment has emerged as an important activity for ensuring the ongoing high performance and reliability of increasingly complex Web sites. Network architects and test professionals often pay close attention to emulation of user behavior when conducting capacity assessments on Web sites. Indeed, user behavior can dramatically affect site performance and stability, but it comprises only half of the story. Network realities also play a major role in system performance, and must be considered during capacity assessment for a reliable reflection of performance in the real world. Network realism includes packet loss, connection speeds, link latencies, jitter, and IP fragmentation. This paper will show the benefits gained from capacity assessment that reflects reality, discuss the impact of both network and user behaviors and present results of a study on this topic.
