Spyware, Adware, and Peer-to-Peer Networks: The Hidden Threat to Corporate Security

Overview The Emerging Internet Threats Survey 2003 provides several rather surprising statistics. Firstly, one in three companies have already detected spyware on their systems, while 68% consider spyware to be a growing and future threat. Secondly, no less than 70% of companies consider that P2P file sharing is creating an "open door" into their organization. Adware, its close relation spyware, and use of P2P file sharing in office hours are insidious and invidious threats that frequently evade both firewalls and anti-virus defenses - but despite the figures, many companies still do not understand the present and future dangers they provide. Adware and spyware are the smiler with the knife under the cloak. This paper will explain these threats: spyware, the adware it supports, and the P2P networks that help spread this and other malware. And what we can do to eliminate those threats.
