Field Service Engineers Improve Productivity and Customer Service with Hand-Held Tablet Solution
Overview Operating and managing licensed water, wastewater and electricity distribution network assets in the north west of England, United Utilities provides services to 35 suppliers of electricity, gas and water to nearly three million homes and businesses in the UK. In addition to problems with data accuracy and timely access to information in the field, any impromptu schedule changes had to be communicated by phone and then documented in paper reports. Productivity was impaired and problem resolutions were delayed. The network services division recently selected the netpad, a new rugged hand-held tablet from Psion Teklogix, for use by its field operations staff. The 150 field service engineers use the netpad to connect to the host system via GPRS (General Packet Radio Services), which provides separate voice and data channels.
