Airtel: Mobile Services for the Masses

Overview With a subscriber base of over two million, Airtel (owned by Bharti Cellular) is India's largest mobile network. Like any other operator, Bharti Cellular has faced decreasing voice revenues, increasing competition and a shift towards a low tariff high volume business model. In order to counter the reduction in voice revenues, and to differentiate its services, Bharti Cellular looked to leverage the popularity of SMS. The company's Airtel network began working with SmartTrust in 2002. It has since launched a series of data services that have increased revenues through a 500% growth in menu-driven data traffic (SMS growth amongst active users). The complete infrastructure is designed to provide a single point of control for the over-the-air management of subscribers, their devices and their access to mobile services.
