Wireless Access - Local (U)SIM usage

Overview Mobile devices are getting more and more computational power and at the same time the development of wireless networks is emerging providing both short-range, local-area and wide-area network support through various technologies. In many wide-area networks, i.e. public mobile network based on GSM and its successors there is a common denominator present, the (U)SIM, capable of hosting security credentials in a tamperproof storage media also allowing execution of security algorithms. When predicting future mobile devices it is easy to expect that they will be designed to work in all types of network topologies. As the (U)SIM then will be present it is also easy to predict a future where the use of the (U)SIM is preferred in any network solution the mobile device is connected into, i.e. not only in the wide- area from where it's existence originates. This document describes usage scenarios and technical details around the objective of getting local access to the (U)SIM.
