Consolidating Tape Storage Using StorageTek's L5500 Tape Library
Overview The demand for storage capacity continues to increase, straining both IT budgets and IT human resources. At the same time, IT managers must extract increased value from their IT investments and lower the cost of ownership. Many companies are accomplishing this goal by consolidating storage resources physically, taking advantage of more scalable solutions and automating processes that historically required human intervention. Storage managers are also taking advantage of solutions that optimize efficiency by matching workloads to the cost and performance characteristics of various storage solutions. New high-end tape drives and tape storage subsystems are important components of a well-designed and efficient storage infrastructure. This white paper discusses the issues in storage consolidation and how StorageTek's new L5500 tape library is designed to fit in to consolidated environments by providing massively scalable throughput and performance, support for a variety of tape drives and interconnects, support for a variety of servers and backup software, with the capacity to manage up to 13.2PB (native) of data.
