Founded in 1870, Aachen University of Technology is the preeminent technology institution in Nordrhein-Westfalen, the most populous state in the Federal Republic of Germany. At the Center for Computing and Communications, speed is everything. With a large user population engaged in simulation and analysis of everything from fluid dynamics to structural mechanics, the Center's systems are called upon daily to promptly and efficiently process some of the most compute-intensive engineering and chemistry applications in the world. In response to a growing need for high performance computing, the Center acquired a Sun Fire 6800 SMP-cluster server with the first 8 nodes installed in June 2001. With the acquisition of the Sun Fire server running Sun Forte Developer 6 tools, the staff of the Center needed a robust compiler to ensure fast and efficient performance of its users' internally developed engineering applications. The Center also had several Sun workstations, but the development team at The Center was not happy with that compiler's performance and used a compiler from another systems vendor. During the benchmarking process, the Center's Dieter an Mey was looking for a compiler with stronger performance. He tested the performance of the new Forte Developer 6 Fortran 95 compiler with a number of user codes and was impressed with the results.
