Comparative Analysis of Major Relational Database Vendors Support for XML
Overview The XML markup language is the lingua franca of data interchange, but its rate of acceptance has been limited by an underlying mismatch between XML and relational databases. This, in turn, has created a need for mapping tools that can make it relatively easy to process XML data within RDBMS. Such tools will help users leverage the XML standard. XML is an ideal tool for data interchange. However, storing XML data meaningfully within relational tables is not straightforward because the XML and the relational database approaches are built on different principles. The intrinsic differences in the two approaches create a need for tools that can transform between XML and relational data. This paper describes how the major relational database vendors have addressed this issue.
