The Pros and Cons of Microsoft's Volume Shadow-Copy Service

Overview Microsoft's Volume Shadow-Copy Service (VSS), embedded in its Windows XP and Server 2003, supplies an in-box snapshot provider and a shadow volume service that coordinates and performs an open file backup at a defined point in time. As such, VSS represents a compromised alternative to the two traditional approaches to the open file problem: application-specific agents and generic open file solutions. As with any new technology, pros and cons exist with VSS. This paper provides Information Technology executives an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of Microsoft's VSS. It also reviews the problem of backing up data from open files, and describes the pros and cons of current industry solutions to this dilemma.
