Technology Helps VHA Put Patient Safety First

Overview The Veterans Health Administration (VHA), with an estimated 172 hospitals, is dedicated to providing the best possible care to America's veterans. VHA decided it was necessary to nationally deploy a system that would improve patient care/patient safety, refine operations, and reduce costs. Specifically, VHA wanted to ensure that patients received the correct medication in the correct dose at the correct time. Read out how the new Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) system, developed jointly by EDS and VHA staff, runs on a laptop PC and uses a standard barcode scanner. The software also offers a comprehensive package of management and accountability tools including site - and user-specific parameters and defaults, patient medication log, and paperless medication administration history.
