Architectures for High Growth Applications: Scale-up or Scale-out
Overview The benefits and issues of "scale-up" and "scale-out" architectures are being increasingly debated. There is no doubt that the scale-out model works. Indeed, Unisys has designed, implemented and provided support for large and successful e-business implementations based on scale-out architectures. However, there are issues with the scale-out model. As it grows there comes a point at which the cost metrics, on which the scale-out model is based, are no longer valid. This document discusses the various benefits of both models and concludes that there is a point at which pure scale-out is no longer cost effective. It is not possible to specify exactly where that point is for every organisation but the issues identified here will present themselves at some time within an infrastructure based on the scaleout model. This paper is based on the analysis from several consultancy assignments that Unisys has completed for European organisations, each with an established scale-out infrastructure supporting their ebusiness channels. These organisations shared similar characteristics, infrastructures comprising hundreds of servers, rapidly increasing support costs and decreasing infrastructure availability.
