Big Brother SA And Microsoft Create Internet Magic
Overview South Africa, unlike many developed markets, has limited Internet bandwidth while the home-based dial-up market is dominated by PC-users who connect to the Internet by way of low speed 28K or 56K modems. Despite these bandwidth constraints, the Big brother SA specification called for high quality video and audio in real-time and a flexible, accessible solution across various modem and other connection modes (28K, 56K, ISDN and Diginet). At the high end, quality was achieved comparable to CNN Internet telecasts or FM stereo radio audio streaming. The solution called for the audio and video broadcast feeds from the house to be linked to six Microsoft Media Encoders consisting of Dell servers running Windows 2000 and Microsoft Media Encoder.
