Multi-protocol Network Convergence: Striking the Right Technology Balance
Overview As service providers continue their quest for operational efficiencies and revenue generation, the importance of network convergence becomes clear. The challenge is to direct investment to an infrastructure that provides the correct technology balance to capture as large a slice of the service revenue pie as possible. Given the ongoing evolution of service offerings and the inherent inaccuracy in forecasting the future service mix and growth rates, the ideal infrastructure will allow the technology balance to change over the network's lifecycle. With no single technology able to efficiently capture all the service revenues today, providers and vendors are looking to new flexible multiprotocol products that integrate layer 2 and layer 3 technologies on a single platform. This white paper describes how to balance between IP, MPLS and ATM network.
