The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) announced on Wednesday that the EU Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) directive will not be enacted into UK legislation until at least June 2006.
The government has announced the last phase of the implementation of the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive. Hardware manufacturers will also be obliged to sign up to a WEEE compliance scheme.
At this point it is not possible to determine whether 'forward compatibility' with the final standard will exist but it is widely believed that at least some manufacturers will be able to upgrade equipment via a software update.
