Tape Drives - Libraries White Papers

HP Bar Code Label Requirements, Compatibility and Usage

Overview The bar code labels on tape cartridges provide human-readable and machine-readable identifiers. Machine-readable identifiers enable the tape library system to manage the tape cartridges. Any failure in the bar code label system from the label and format, to the library reader, to the application can cause data to be inaccessible to the system and the user. Also, misuse or a misunderstanding of the bar code technology can result in backup and restore failures. This white paper discusses the aspects of using bar code labels successfully in a tape backup environment. These aspects includes technical requirements of bar code labels, technical requirements of bar code readers, format conventions for bar code labels of each tape technology, interchange compatibility of labels from differing label manufacturers and between, differing tape automation products, tape library and tape autoloader usage of bar code label information, ISV software application needs and usage of bar code label information, HP recommended bar code labels, formats, and usage, potential issues caused by improper use of bar code labels, do's and don'ts of bar code labels.
