Wi-Fi: Public Access Drives Market for Wireless Internet Services
Overview Wi-Fi, or wireless fidelity transmission has upset the established order of the wireless industry, and forced everyone involved to rethink their target markets, applications, partnerships, and strategies. However, Wi-Fi comes with its own set of issues, most notably, security. Users connecting to an enterprise through a WLAN create openings for hackers or unauthorized users. In addition, the technology is a work in progress, and is supported by an ever-evolving list of standards. But, new Wi-Fi implementations will deliver both high bandwidth and true mobility at a relatively modest cost. Future implementations also will expand the effective range of Wi-Fi to more than 10 miles, compared with its current range of a few hundred feet.
