Security Consideration for IP SANs
Overview
IP Storage Area Networks allow small- and medium-sized business that
until now could not afford a SAN to break free of the limits of direct-attached storage. An IP SAN is much cheaper to install and maintain
than a Fibre Channel SAN, because Ethernet is already in place in 90 percent of businesses today. But as often seems true, good things
come with strings attached. Networks large and small can enjoy the benefits of IP SANs, provided they give due attention to the security
risks that accompany those benefits.
IP SANs bring the SAN down to the small-business level, but can open them up to big threats. Even small business owners must be savvy
enough to make sure their SAN is secure. But what good is bringing a SAN down to this level if the savings are negated by the added cost
of security technologies? And what if these technologies cause an unacceptable slowdown on the network?
