3Com Gigabit Ethernet Solution Speeds Transfer of Molecular Graphics

Overview As Boston University Medical Center's research volume grew, its biophysics, physiology, and other research teams began experiencing delays of several minutes when transferring graphical diagrams of molecular structures across its previous Ethernet network. They required the solution to support both virtual local area networks (VLANs) for secure workgroup traffic and AppleTalk to sustain older Macintosh printers. They therefore implemented 3Com Gigabit Ethernet Solution. Powered by the 3Com solution, Boston University Medical Center's biophysics and physiology teams were able to rapidly transfer 3-to100-megabyte files of diagrams of protein molecules and other structures among themselves and other research teams working on potentially life-saving research such as cancer gene therapy and the Human Genome Project.
