Command and Control Your Network: Monitoring and Security on the Riverstone Platform
Overview Recent events have shown that the old adage, "What you don’t see can’t hurt you," is true. As with many things in life, this applies to networking as well. Not being able to see the port scans being run against your network does not mean that they are not happening. With the specter of cyber terrorism looming over ongoing defense network build outs, it would be surprising if network monitoring and security capabilities were not carefully weighed along with the other features of the routers used to build the network. Furthermore, active monitoring and analysis of network traffic is the only way that it is possible to intelligently set network policies in order to insure that mission-critical data flows unimpeded while lower priority traffic can be throttled back. Approaches like this prevent degradation or denial of service, either from external attack or inadvertent internal cause.
