Teaching Using Simics

Overview Virtutech Simics is a very powerful full-system simulator. While its traditional usage has been for applied work like computer architecture research, development of operating systems, and hardware/software cosimulation, it can also be used to great effect in education. The Simics technology can be used in many different types of courses, from low-level computer architecture to general programming and network management courses. This white paper gives some examples of how Simics can be used in teaching courses in a number of subjects. Subjects covered are: computer architecture, operating systems, parallel programming, distributed systems, fault-tolerant systems, system administration, and compiler technology.
