Network Evolution from Shared to Switched Technology

Overview A member of the St. Luke’s Shawnee Mission Health System, Missouri-based HealthNet provides over 370,000 patients in the Kansas City metro area with managed care services, consisting of group, employer, individual, and family-based packages. HealthNet was already running an imaging application used for insurance billing purposes. The imaging product runs on an IBM AS/400 mini computer and is accessible by users via a Novell network. This system was limited to specific departments, but initiated large file transfers across the network, requiring bandwidth availability at all times. HealthNet decided to transition their shared FDDI backbone to a switched FDDI backbone which will give them the bandwidth required to accomplish their networking goals. The switched FDDI network preserved their investment in FDDI equipment, while providing a clear migration path to more robust solutions. A SmartSwitch Router was integrated into the network for a combination of purposes, the primary reason being to filter the NETBIOS traffic coming in from the 56K lines that linked the affiliates and remote facilities.
