Streaming Media and Just-In-Time Delivery with the Java Media Framework API (JMF)

Overview This session describes a technique whereby a presentation of prerecorded audio and video can be divided into multiple short segments and downloaded in the background while a previously loaded segment is playing. Downloading asynchronous material asynchronously eliminates the problem of net congestion since segments are not played in real-time. Using TCP instead of streaming protocols eliminates many errors associated with streaming. This method allows users to have full control over media playback using a standard Web browser with Java technology support and the Java Media Framework API (JMF). A segment can be replayed immediately, since it is cached locally at the client PC. Users also have immediate access to previously viewed segments. An architecture for managing media delivered in this format will also be presented. This session will also include a demonstration of a work-in-progress. This session is a technical tutorial for both the novice as well as the expert programmer, with demonstrations and code examples illustrating the basic as well as advanced features of JMF.
