NetWorker Client File Index: Improved Performance, Scalability And Robustness
Overview The explosive growth in data storage has resulted in extreme stress on backup software. It is not uncommon for the backup databases to exceed 100 GB in size. Due in part to the size of these databases and also due to the unique demands of backup applications, a unique approach to managing these records is required. Legato completely re-architected the backup database in Legato NetWorker (called the Client File Index) and released it in 2000 with Legato NetWorker version 6.0. The new design substantially improved performance in many critical areas. File index backup now occurs at device speed. Browsing through saved files is now 300% faster. The client file index has been re-designed to use 20%-40% less space than before, and common management tasks can be completed more than five times faster. NetWorker also added new features like index roll-in, NDMP support, cross-platform data browsing, and more flexible policies for stored data.
