Clustering versus Automated Availability Management
Overview Clustering computers is generally done for either load balancing or to protect against hardware failures. Typically this results in active/passive two node clusters. One computer for the price of two. Not very cost effective, is it? It is possible to create active/active clusters containing more than two nodes with some products, but not many. No simple clustering solution specifically addresses grouping resources together with their applications for better management of the big picture. Automated availability management, on the other hand, takes a different approach. Its focus begins with the application and ties it together with the resources required to make it function. All resources are grouped together so that you can easily locate and manage them. You can control their availability either automatically through pre-determined policies or manually through a point-and-click interface.
