Ethernet White Papers

Service Provider Applications for Combining and Migrating ATM to Ethernet

Overview This whitepaper talks about Ethernet advantages over ATM. In its day, ATM was the only protocol that allowed traffic engineering, QoS and the ability to transport both voice and data. But things have changed. Now Ethernet, a much simpler and less expensive protocol that evolved in the LAN, is on its way to becoming the standard for internetworking. Ethernet has incorporated the crucial QoS capabilities that were originally available only in ATM. At the same time, new protocols like voice over IP and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) allow service providers to offer traffic engineered voice and data services over a an inexpensive and ubiquitous Ethernet IP network. Ethernet and IP are far less complex and significantly easier to manage than the ATM networks being replaced.
