The Financial Impact of Migrating to Linux
Overview
The economics of migrating to Linux for many companies are compelling. In most
cases companies will experience savings on both software costs and support & maintenance.
Furthermore, since Linux migration commonly is associated with server consolidation
many companies also will benefit from the need for fewer IT personnel because
those resources generally are driven by the number of boxes in place. Fewer boxes
also can translate into significant Facilities savings since those, too, generally are
driven by the number of boxes involved.
In fact in an expensive suburban location a
reduction in Facilities costs can play a key role in companies determining the
economic benefit of a Linux migration. Significant savings also are available from
systems management software since, depending upon the platform selected, much
of that software is included in the hardware price.
