A Reference Model For Large-File/High-Bandwidth File Ingest For Digital Media Management

Overview Sun Microsystems Inc. has developed a scalable computing and storage architecture to support the specific challenges facing media-oriented customers, particularly those in the broadcast industry. This paper discusses the design philosophy for a scalable, standards-based, and open architecture to support media asset management (MAM). It presents a reference model for ingesting, cataloguing, storing, retrieving, playing out, and managing approximately 20 terabytes of MPEG-encoded video data, in real time. From the perspective of the file services, disk storage modules, and associated servers, these files could just as easily be MP3 or WAV files, DVD disk images, or other formats.
