Marconi Plays Key Role in ATM-Over-Satellite Experimental Network
Overview At the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, D.C., electronics engineers were given the assignment of developing a satellite communications network that offers small-deck vessels at sea the same access to important military data that large-deck combatants already have. Small-deck vessels include frigates, destroyers and submarines with limited space for communications antennas. In Pittsburgh, Marconi, recognized as the first company to commercialize ATM technology, increased its ASX ATM backbone switching capacity to 622 Mbps over an OC-12c terrestrial network.
