VPN and WEP: Wireless 802.11b Security in a Corporate Environment
Overview
Workforce mobility is the next frontier for enterprise productivity. Intel IT has taken a leading role in the adoption of wireless technology as a mechanism to enhance the mobility of its 80,000-plus employees. As a result, many Intel employees now enjoy the flexibility of a computer that does not require a physical network connection to send and receive e-mail, access the Web, or share documents.
To ensure a secure, cohesive, and extensible wireless infrastructure, Intel IT embraced the IEEE 802.11b wireless standard as its only wireless protocol. 802.11b is a radio-based variant of established wired technology. It offers familiar architecture, reasonable data rates, a roadmap of future enhancements, and WEP (Wireless Equivalent Privacy) security.
