Scalable Computer Architectures for Data Warehousing

Overview This paper compares five different machine architectures: the Sun Fire 15K Server, the NCR/Teradata 5250, the IBM p690 Regatta, the IBM RS/6000 SP, and the HP Superdome. The connection model of each machine is presented in a visual format, and the strengths and weaknesses of each architecture are revealed. The machine architectures that enable uniform data access times and high bisectional bandwidth are superior—those that do not are inferior. Each machine architecture is graded according to these characteristics, and the Sun Fire 15K is the only system that has both uniform data access times and a large bisectional bandwidth. Its unique, tightly coupled, symmetric crossbar interconnect is the key to its superior scalability for parallel SQL data warehouse workloads.
