.NET InterOp
Overview
Once .NET is released everything will be C# and the CLR – and we will never have to
deal with Win32, COM, or COM+ again. (Just think – all that work you did understanding
how DCOM works, what the heck apartment threading was, and how to write a Declare
for FillRect will become useless!)
And, if you believe that…
Millions of lines of COM code exist out
there that we, as .NET developers, will need to interoperate with. Moreover, the Win32 API and COM+ will go on providing functionality that we simply cannot do without. Fortunately, the .NET Framework provides system, tools, and strategies that enable
strong integration with past technologies and allow legacy code to be integrated with new .NET components.
The power and ease of use of the “Interoperation Services” will be a key factor in the
decision-making process for early adoption of the .NET platform. With that thought
squarely in mind, let’s take a look at the world of interoperation with COM, Win32, and
COM+.
