Hi-Speed USB Hard Drive Performance with Integrated Hi-Speed USB Host Controller

Overview As PC performance increases, external peripherals will need larger bandwidths for communication with the PC and transferring of data. Also, new usage models for PCs have end users involved in digital video, audio, and photo editing and storage, thus the need for large external storage devices has grown in popularity and use. These casual storage devices coupled with Hi-Speed USB speeds have allowed system backup and multimedia file storage to become a daily task.

Prior to Hi-Speed USB, system backup and file transfers could take minutes and even hours to complete, but with the increased speeds of up to 480 megabits per second with Hi-Speed USB, the same tasks can be done in a fraction of the time, taking only seconds to complete.

This performance brief analyzes the data transfer rates of the Intel Integrated Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Host Controller and Maxtor 3000LE Hi-Speed HDD. The results show significant performance increases over previous USB data rates and best in-class performance numbers to date while using an off-the shelf system and Hi-Speed USB peripheral.
